This luxury cabin, a stone's throw from the shore of Lake Michigan, is a design-lover’s dream home, with every detail carefully selected to contribute to its polished-yet-rustic aesthetic. The owner, a professional interior designer, worked his magic here, and you’ll love the end result.
Incredible property for larger groups. Three bedroom main house, plus three bedroom guest house, connected by a wonderful, oversized deck with multiple seating areas and spa.
Tucked away in a private, serene wooded setting, yet moments from the lakefront, this custom home boasts 3,000 square feet between the main (2000 SF) and guest (1000 SF) homes —including six bedrooms, four bathrooms, and one very large, open common area with soaring ceilings and incredible wall of windows, bountiful seating space, and a two-story wood burning stone fireplace. Chat with the cook at the counter-height bar as they prepare dinner in our gourmet kitchen (complete with a professional grade Italian range, separate second oven, and concrete countertops), then gather around the spacious dining table to enjoy it together.
After dinner, grab a bottle of wine and choose from several outdoor areas, including a second floor terrace, multiple porches—including a spacious screened-in porch adjoining the living room—or the sprawling back deck with gas grill, oversized hot tub and outdoor shower. Summer evenings are especially tranquil; the waves crashing on the beach are often background music! And, in the chillier months, the hot tub and a fire pit keep you toasty.
Sleeping options are plentiful: two king bedrooms in the main house--including a luxury master on top floor with spacious bath and antique tub, as well as an adjoining (albeit very small) nursery/child room w/ toddler bed! There is another bedroom with two full beds. In the guest house, there is a large king bedded room upstairs, one room with a queen bed on the main level, as well as a bunk-bed room with two full-sized beds that's perfect for kids (and adults who want to relive summer camp). All bedrooms (aside from bunk room) include flat-screen TVs. The double laundry is equipped with 2 full sized washers and dryers.
Access to the beach is ideal—Harbert Road beach access point just just a two minute walk down from the driveway. There is also a path to Cherry Beach if you’d rather, which is about a 5 minute walk.
The charming Harbor Country area (which encompasses Harbert as well as nearby Sawyer and Lakeside/Union Pier/New Buffalo/Three Oaks) has plenty of restaurant options for a special evening out. You’ll also find an assortment of antique and specialty shops within a few miles of the home.

Summary: We rented the Hobart house for a gathering of old friends and loved everything about it- the location was ideal for people traveling from Chicago and Detroit. The layout of the house is perfect for large groups, with a well appointed kitchen at the center that faces the living room and dining area. We spent three days together hanging out, going for walks, cooking, and playing board games. The interior design of the house is delightful, the space is cozy yet large, with interesting art and furniture. Bedrooms were very comfortable and each one manages to have a nice view while feeling private. Our group loved the nearby trails and a few of us tried the hot tub, but we barely took advantage of the lovely outdoor spaces because it was winter. We all agreed that we’d love to come back! What a magical weekend.

Summary: This is our third year and this property, and it continues to be a great fit for our needs. With two residences on the property, it works well for a multi-generation family with 2 dogs who don't always see eye-to-eye. Last year, the smaller house became Covid central when our daughter and SIL arrived with the disease (mild, thankfully), and the rest of us managed to stay well. This year, we were back to our typical arrangements with the family with small children in the small house and the adults in the big house. Less than 5 minute walk to beach and as a family of cooks, everything we need to enjoy our days and evenings together. Owners are helpful and easy to communicate with. They offered us an extension at the end of our stay because the house was unbooked. While we couldn't take advantage of that, we did ask for a slightly later checkout time which they accommodated. I know that was a one-time opportunity but it demonstrates their desire to do whatever they can to ensure guests have a great visit. We're booked for 2025!

Summary: We gathered for a family reunion, and we needed to sleep 12 people. The size of the house plus guest house was just right. An easy walk to the beach - it was so close! We enjoyed the hot tub, the grill, and the fire pit. We had other family members scattered about in cottages in Harbert Woods and the Prairie Club, and we were able to walk everywhere to meet up with them. Very well located for us to enjoy all our favorite shops and restaurants.

Summary: Our family reunion of 10 people recently stayed at Harbert Home and Guest House. The location of the property was ideal. It was situated in a peaceful neighborhood and within walking distance to the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. The property was spacious and had a well-planned layout. The open-concept living area, complete with a large dining table and a fully-equipped kitchen, provided ample space for our group to gather and socialize. The fact that it could comfortably accommodate all 10 of us without feeling cramped was a testament to the owner's thoughtfulness. The bedrooms were clean and comfortable. The master bedroom has a little side room with a toddler bed that was perfect for our 3 year old grandson. Having two sets of washing and drying machine was very convenient. Appreciated the "pantry", to store our weeks worth of provisions, the large refrigertator and the ice maker. Communication with the owner was seamless. They responded promptly to our inquiries. Harbert House provided us with a perfect blend of comfort, convenience, and tranquility, making it an ideal spot for our family reunion. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a similar experience in the area.

Summary: Property was great! Fit the needs of our family well. Very close to the beach, which was so great. The home felt very comfortable, well decorated and cozy. Kitchen was very well stocked with all tools needed for cooking meals for a large group. Only bit of “criticism” we had was the home could use a deep clean. Pillows in some of the rooms could be replaced as they don’t have much life left to them. You can see this is a well loved property and needs a bit of a refresh as far as wear and tear. Overall, the stay was fantastic and the owners We’re communicative and quick to respond. Would definitely refer the Harbert Home and Guest House to others!

Summary: Harbert House was a wonderful place for our 3 generation family, ranging from 68 to 2 years. The walk to the beach was easy going down to the lake. Three flights of stairs coming back up took a little bit, but it was well worth the effort to enjoy the beautiful, clean beach and fun water play. The owners were very accommodating, concerned and helpful bringing a lantern and flashlights when we had a storm resulting in a power outage for 36 hours. We would love to enjoy this property again in the future!!!

Summary: We loved the location - it was so nice to walk to the beach easily! We were with our kids and their kids (5 who were 5, 4, 3, almost 2 and 1). We had plenty of room and the kitchen had everything you would need. We had a couple of rainy days but we enjoyed visits to the library and the children's museum. We would definitely return!

Summary: The kitchen was stocked great! We loved the outdoor space and hot tub. The pics on the website are outdated. The decor is "dark". A lighter color of paint would do wonders. Also, some of the antiques made the upstairs smell musty. The rug is frayed in upstairs bedroom, which made a tripping hazard in the dark. I almost fell twice getting up at night. It needs attention.

Summary: Ideal location for a family vacation. Nestled in the woods with lots of wildlife to see. Marked hiking trails in the woods. It was a five minute walk to the beach for swimming and playing in the sand. The kitchen was well stocked with everything you would need to cook and serve meals for a group.
